September Flag Raising Ceremony
September 16 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm
In the year of our inception, the Australian Community commenced an informal September tradition of remembering the Ten Australians who perished at Ground Zero on 9/11/2001. Six years later it has evolved into a formal flag raising ceremony at one of New York’s most historic sites.
On September 16, 2017 the Australian Community, in collaborating with The Bowling Green Association, will again be continuing a tradition of raising the Australian flag at the site where George Washington marched down Broadway and first raised the Stars and Stripes in 1783.
The ceremony will take place at the Charging Bull Triangle near Bowling Green, located at the end of Broadway in Lower Manhattan.
September 3rd is Flag Day in Australia, but hosting a public gathering the week before the official 9/11 Commemoration would prove problematic. Further, commemorations held on a week day are not always convenient to attend for most Australians.
The decision was therefore made to host this annual flag raising ceremony at 12:00 noon on the third Saturday in September each year, which falls on the 16th in 2017.
Rain or Shine, the National Anthems will be sung, the Ode and the names of the Ten Australians will be read. We wish to thank the stellar Australian talent who have donated their time to organize and perform at this year’s ceremony.
Amanda Bishop, Kaye Tuckerman, Georgia Kate Haege, Marika Aubrey and Ben McHugh.
After the ceremony concludes, members and guests are invited to make their way to Beckett’s, a short distance away at 40 Stone Street, for a more informal celebration of the “Spirit of Mateship”.
All Australians living in New York are invited to attend this public ceremony.
