September Flag Raising at Bowling Green
September 16 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm
In the first year of our inception, The Australian Community commenced a September tradition of remembering the Ten Australians who perished at Ground Zero on 9/11/2001.
This September and going forward The Australian Community, in collaborating with The Bowling Green Association, will continue this tradition with a ceremony more aligned with the ANZAC tradition: Raising the Australian flag.
September 3rd is Flag Day in Australia, but hosting a public gathering the week before the official 9/11 Commemoration would prove problematic. Further, commemorations held on a week day are not always convenient to attend for most Australians.
The decision was therefore made to host this annual flag raising ceremony at noon on the third Saturday in September each year, which this year falls on the 16th.
This will be the second year that the Australian flag will be raised at this historic NYC site where George Washington first raised the Stars and Stripes.
The ceremony to raise the 8′ x 12′ Australian flag will commence at 12:00 pm. The ceremony will include performances from talented Australians including the singing of the Australian and the US national anthems.
After the ceremony concludes around 1:00 pm, members and their guests are invited to make their way to Beckett’s at 40 Stone Street for a more informal celebration of the ANZAC spirit.
