September Flag Raising Ceremony 2018
September 15 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm
In September 2012, the Australian Community commenced an informal tradition of remembering the Ten Australians who perished at Ground Zero on 9/11/2001. Seven years later it has evolved into a formal flag raising ceremony at one of New York's most historic sites.
On September 15, 2018 the Australian Community, in collaborating with The Bowling Green Association, will again be continuing a tradition of raising the Australian flag at the site where George Washington marched down Broadway and first raised the Stars and Stripes in 1783.
The ceremony will take place at the Charging Bull Triangle near Bowling Green, located at the end of Broadway in Lower Manhattan.
September 3rd is Flag Day in Australia, but hosting a public gathering the week before the official 9/11 Commemoration would prove problematic. Further, commemorations held on a week day are not always convenient to attend for most Australians.
The decision was therefore made to host this annual flag raising ceremony at 12:00 noon on the third Saturday in September each year, which falls on the 15th in 2018.
We are grateful to the stellar Australian talent who will be participating in this year's ceremony including the singing of the National Anthems, the reading of My Country, The Ode, the names of the Ten Australians, and a performance of True Blue to close out the ceremony.
Thank you to all of the Australian performing artists who will be generously donating their talents to this ceremony.
After the ceremony concludes around 1:00 pm, all are invited to make their way to Beckett's, a short distance away at 40 Stone Street, for a more informal celebration of the "Spirit of Mateship".
All Australians living in New York are invited to attend this public ceremony.
