This year marks the fifth anniversary of the University of Queensland Benefit Dinner, and they have a special rugby treat…the amazing Ella brothers. Yes, all three…Mark, Gary and Glen will be amongst the featured legends!
During the 80s, the Ellas’ mesmerizing combination of skill and ability was arguably the most exciting thing to ever come to club, state and international rugby. Mark, Gary and Glen had honed their years of backyard footy in the inner suburbs of Sydney into a magical formula that saw them all represent Australia at both schoolboy and senior Wallaby level.
In addition, at a time when club rugby was in its heyday, the Ellas won numerous championships with Sydney powerhouse, Randwick Rugby Club. Below is just a sample of their magic in action.
This year is also special because the panel will include our first ever lady player, Mackenzie Sadler. Mackenzie is a legend in the making. In addition to selection in the Queensland and Australian Rugby Sevens squads, Mackenzie was captain of the championship winning UQ team in the inaugural season of the Aon Uni 7s series in 2017 and she is back at it again this year. It will be especially interesting to have the particular perspective of a contemporary player who is excelling in the women’s game.
Dr. Mark Loane returns to both present the medal named in his honor to this year’s recipient and to host the panel.
Mark has promised to keep rugby as the topic but the big man has a knack for melding history to the game they play in Heaven, so look for some interesting tidbits, especially as Mark Ella was his preferred roommate on Wallaby tours.
The price is the same, the venue is the same, the after party is the same, the weather will be terrific and everyone is looking forward to another fabulous evening.
