Virtual Wine Master Class

June 1, 2022 @ 7:30 pm 8:30 pm

The Australian Community is hosting a virtual wine Master Class on Wednesday, June 1, from 7:30 PM Eastern US.

Our Special Guest will be Gordon Little of Little Peacock Imports. Gordon will be featuring a selection of Australian wines from BuyAussieWine.com.

Gordon has some suggestions if you are looking to pick up wine for the evening:

Australia is one of the largest growers of Riesling in the world. We also have globally recognized Riesling brands from Clare and Eden Valleys, Grampians, Strathbogie Ranges, Frankland River, Margaret River and Tasmania. While many drinkers assume riesling is always sweet, it is often made (particularly in Australia) very dry! Try Best’s Great Western Riesling ($26), Mac Forbes RS3 Riesling ($38), Alkoomi Riesling ($19), David Franz Riesling ($30). Other wonderful Aussie rieslings include Grosset, Yalumba, Jim Barry and Pikes.

Pinot Noir, such a noble variety. Aussie Pinots today are some of the most compelling in the world, and at prices far below those Burgundian classics! Try the richer cherry and spice styles from Mornington Peninsula such as Moorooduc Estate Pinot Noir ($38), or the lighter more strawberry-inflected tones from Yarra Valley ($90). Or the high altitudes of Orange in New South Wales such as Gilbert Family Pinot Noir ($25). Or even locales as far flung as Margaret River (like Happs Pinot Noir ($23)), or historic Adelaide Hills winemakers including Tim Knappstein ($32). There are more delicious Australian pinot noirs in the American market out there right now than ever before! Reach for bottles of Ben Haines, Giant Steps, Bindi, By Farr, Joshua Cooper, or Dalrymple.

No, we’re not all about Shiraz… but it is a huge part of Australia’s winemaking heritage and global recognition. It also spans a wonderful array of styles, from the cooler climates of the southeast to the richer styles of Barossa. I sometimes joke as an Australian wine importer that “by law, I must show you a shiraz,” but when I show several different Aussie Shirazes in a line-up can be some of the most enlightening. Look for boutique Barossa brands like Tim Smith Shiraz ($40) or Wits End Shiraz ($20) from McLaren Vale for more classics. For cooler climates, check out Little Brunswick Wine Co’s Grampians release “Jardwadjali” ($38), First Creek Shiraz ($24) from Hunter Valley, or Ashbrook Estate Shiraz ($23) from Margaret River. Or something completely offbeat from remote Mt Gambier like Good Intentions Wine Co’s Relatively Red ($38), a light, almost spritzy version of this varietal. Other wonderful Aussie Shirazes include Clonakilla, Penfolds, Taltarni, Hewitson, d’Arenberg, Kalleske, and Forest Hill.
